The Changing Role of the Teacher in Early Year’s Settings


The greatest revolution in schools these days is neither the integration of modern technology nor the construction of classrooms, not even assessment and curriculum changes been experienced, but the roles teachers have played for years which are being transformed to date in the growth of individual culture to develop the nation. Teachers have had many challenges in assisting in guiding students through individualized education routes, building collaborative learning opportunities everywhere, identifying and providing relevant learning resources and provision of support both in and outside their classrooms. The education these students get from their childhood is what has led to the transformation of growth in various fields in the economy thus improving the living standard of the majority and building the profession of individuals as well and changing most behavior in the communities.

Teaching has evolved over the years and differs from the old versions of tell and hear stories and practices just like how the medical techniques have changed and now differ from the old methods like bloodletting and application of leeches. Teaching doesn’t entail primarily to lecturing students who sit in rows at their desks listening and recording whatever they get from their lecturers but rather provide each child with a unique and rewarding experience that would help him locate his route path to achievements attained in the future. The educational environment should not only be confined to the classrooms but rather extend to homes, society and across the globe. Thus, teachers play a vital role in molding the discipline and character of students from their childhood. With the early teaching revolution, students have now been made aware that learning does not take place only in books but everywhere in their day to day activities in bits and bytes. Teachers through their advancement of training and skills over time have changed the notion that students are not consumers of facts but active creators of knowledge and that school are not just a structure of bricks but a center of long time learning. Teaching has now been recognized as one of the most important, compelling and challenging career choices that have become vital to our cultural, social and economic health of the nation across the globe.

Today the outcome of this systematic transformation in the education environment is being felt and observed massively in the revolution of knowledge, public demand for advanced learning and the information technology as schools all over are now slowly restructuring themselves with the teachers’ efforts. Thousands of teachers have helped and lead the way by rethinking each and every part of their job through; improving their relationship with colleagues, students and the community as a whole; pushing for their rights and responsibilities; developing the techniques and tools they employ in their teaching practice; making decisions unto what standards to be set and ensure they are being met; changes, form and content of the curriculum over time and their preparation as teachers in acquiring and improving their learning skills (Lanier). Thus teachers have undertaken a fundamental role in the revolution of the education sector by reinventing themselves and their occupation to enable them to serve students and schools better. Traditionally, teaching focused on custodial of child care, giving out information and sorting out academically on students’ performance.

Teachers used to be briefed on how, what and when to teach, they educated the student in the same manner and would be held responsible if most of them failed to learn. Traditionally teachers were expected to teach using same methods that were practiced in the same generations, and deviation from those practices was discouraged by myriad education of the governing rules and regulations. Therefore, most of the teachers in their lessons simply delivered the same teachings year after year thus growing the education gray and weary as they had no opportunity to change their daily delivery to the student’s lessons.

However teachers today have been encouraged to adjust and implement new practices which have acknowledged both the science and art of the education system, as they understand deeply the essence of teaching is linking a caring and knowledgeable adult to a secure and motivated child. Teachers know that their major role is to get the basics of each student as an individual so that they can comprehend his learning styles, interest, abilities, unique needs and also their social and cultural background. In the recent times, teachers have become more committed to building their relationship with students of many cultures including those youngsters having strong traditional teachings thus educating and advising them on education importance. This has helped these students from dropping out as many have been forced out from the school system due to their various cultures that do not consider education as beneficial to their living standards.

Teachers no longer see themselves as the king or queens of the classrooms, but rather as motivators and role models to the students who yields the ability to understand, seek, and utilize the knowledge acquired to make better decisions in their personal lives and be of additional value to the society. This outcome has only been accomplished where the primary role of teachers is to counsel students as they develop and mature, and mostly assisting them in integrating their emotional, social, and intellectual growth. Therefore, teachers have discovered their role in the education system which has helped in the transformation of the education sector and changed the growth of a nation in a better way. In this transformed learning industry, students have been made passionate contributors in the instructional learning process by participating in various education adventures. Teachers nowadays understand that for students to take full responsibility for their studies, the education curriculum must have a relation to their lives thus engaging their natural curiosity to their real accomplishment in the Nation.
